Iconic Cape Town skyscraper home to four-star hotel-style accommodation.

In the heart of the city, the 35 story One Thibault stands proudly as the second tallest building in Cape Town.

One Thibault offers hotel-style living for business, conference, corporate and leisure travellers. The central positioning of the building, on Hans Strijdom Avenue, provides stunning views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. Easy access to the vibrant city makes the 260 self-catering apartments an ideal choice for those seeking a comfortable and scenic stay in Cape Town.

HISTORY

“The building played a big part in most Capetonians lives,” says Charlene van Zyl, Director of Sales and Marketing.

The 35-storey concrete tower block building was formerly known as the BP Centre, Standard Bank, Eskom and the LG Buildings.  The building has as distinct look and is of great importance in Cape Town’s postmodern development era, earning it recognition as a heritage site.

Work on the building began in 1969 and was completed just under four years later, in 1972, with its sliding core completed at a rate of six, later four, floors a day. It became known as a renowned commercial skyscraper until 2021 when the conversion to a mixed-use development, including residential units, began.

The skyscraper was the brainchild of architect Revel Fox who passed away in 2004 and is built at a 34-degree diagonal twist. One Thibault is on a north–south axis. This reduces sun loads on the façades of the building, thereby reducing pressure on the air-conditioning system. The mounted pre-cast screen on every floor allows good air flow and cuts off direct sun rays.

The façade is made of dark grey stone to resemble the granite found on Table Mountain.

The unique orientation of One Thibault Hotels means none of the apartments stare straight into the façades of the surrounding buildings. This approach preserves the building’s historical significance but also aligns with sustainable development practices and reflects a commitment to both sustainability and the preservation of architectural heritage.

The name Thibault, a word of French origin, carries a strong legacy. It roughly translates to ‘bold or brave people.’ One of the most well-known bearers of the name was Thibault IV of Champagne.
